Attention nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers! The renowned St Kilda penguin viewing area is set to reopen its doors in 2024, following extensive redevelopment works at the pier. Approximately 1400 little penguins call St Kilda beach home, and visitors from far and wide flock to witness their nightly parade as they return to their burrows at dusk. The closure has been necessary for the safety of both the penguins and visitors during the redevelopment, but anticipation is high for the reopening of this iconic tourist attraction.

As part of the major St Kilda Pier Redevelopment, the St Kilda Breakwater and penguin view area have been temporarily closed. However, once the project is complete, the new pier will feature enhanced public access and improved viewing opportunities for visitors to observe the colony of Little Penguins. The reconstruction of the pier aims to preserve the pier's heritage while creating a modern and accessible space for the community and tourists alike.

The St Kilda Pier itself remains open and accessible, but the penguin viewing area will remain closed until early 2024. Parks Victoria is considering introducing a fee for visitors to access the new viewing platform, which will provide improved viewing conditions and ensure the ongoing protection of the penguins. The fee structure is still under review, but the goal is to strike a balance between accessibility and sustainability.

Stay tuned for further updates on the progress of the redevelopment and the official reopening date of the St Kilda penguin viewing area. Mark your calendars now for a chance to witness the unforgettable spectacle of the Little Penguins' nightly parade in 2024.
