Burrowing Owl Behavior and Habitat
Colorful Fiction: Owls, Prairie Dogs, and Rattlesnakes
Contrary to popular belief, owls, prairie dogs, and rattlesnakes do not commonly cohabitate in the same burrow. The legendary tale of this unlikely trio sharing a subterranean abode is a colorful fiction.
Burrowing Owl Characteristics
Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) are small, sandy-colored owls with striking bright-yellow eyes. They inhabit open landscapes throughout North and South America.
These long-legged owls typically reside underground in burrows that they either excavate themselves or take over from other animals such as prairie dogs.
